JOHANNESBURG - Deputy Health Minister Joe Phaahla is expected to conduct a site visit to Tembisa Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, following another fire at the healthcare facility.
The latest inferno, which erupted just after 5am on Wednesday in the outpatient unit, comes days after another fire gutted the emergency section at the weekend.
While Ekurhuleni emergency crews managed to extinguish the fire, an unconfirmed number of patient files were destroyed.
Health Ministry spokesperson, Foster Mohale, said Phaahla would be joined by Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko and other health officials, as they assess the extent of the damage and explore how national government can support the province to maintain access to healthcare services.
“To establish the extent of the damage and make a determination on the impact on access to essential healthcare.”
