JOHANNESBURG - Three days after the news broke of an assassination attempt on Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s life, the African National Congress (ANC) has finally weighed in on the matter, calling for calm and space for police to investigate.
On Tuesday, police confirmed they were probing a shooting incident involving Mashatile’s convoy.
They were attacked in March, shortly after the deputy president left an ANC national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Boksburg.
Speaking in Johannesburg on Wednesday, ANC secretary general, Fikile Mbalula, said the party learnt about the ordeal through media reports.
“We were taken aback about these reports because neither the deputy president or any in government informed the ANC about this situation. When everyone else wants to define it in a particular way, it becomes a cause for concern for the ANC, because we don’t know what happened, where this happened or how it happened except that the reports are saying, even from the deputy president himself that this happened during the NEC meeting so we leave it in the capable hands of the police.”
