JOHANNESBURG - The governance of netball in the country is under the microscope as Netball South Africa (NSA)’s executive appeared before Parliament’s portfolio committee on Sports, Arts and Culture on Tuesday.
The body has been under the spotlight after the sport’s global governing body, World Netball, suspended its president, Cecelia Molokwane, for alleged misconduct and interfering in the process of its upcoming elections.
Molokwane was not present in Parliament on Tuesday morning as the terms of her suspension stipulate she may not participate in any official functions of Netball SA, or the body would risk being suspended as a member nation.
During proceedings, Netball SA was unable to provide clear answers on the charges against her, relating to mismanagement of funds and disbanding NSA member associations that she viewed as a threat to her 2025 re-election.
In addition to being unable to provide answers on Molokwane, the NSA board missed the deadline to submit audited financial statements and CEO Modiegi Komane was unable to account for several expenses on Netball SA’s books.
“Honourable members, honourable chair. I don’t think this is fair. This is very detailed and had we received [it], we would have attached evidence of these things. Like I indicate, I’m not giving an excuse, I came in October [2023] and these financials were already audited."
