The Pontiff, who was the Bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church, has been battling ill health recently.

His last public appearance was on Sunday, where he was seen greeting crowds on Easter Sunday at St Peter's Square.

Action SA spokesperson Matthew George said, "As over 1.3 billion catholics mourn the loss of Pope Francis, who ascended to the papacy on 13 March 2013, his memory is assured to be one of exemplary servitude, both to the church and the world. Through times of great challenge, his leadership guided the catholic church into the modern age with compassion and humility, leaving a legacy that will endure for generations to come."

Meanwhile, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says Pope Francis will be remembered for his progressive leadership of the church and his compassion for those in need."
