JOHANNESBURG - The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party is visiting the illegal white Afrikaans-only settlement of Kleinfontein in a fact-finding mission.

A small delegation from the official opposition party is currently engaging with leaders from the Eastern Pretoria settlement.

Earlier this month, EWN reported Kleinfontein is facing a battle to survive after its valuation was raised from R21 million to R291 million by the Tshwane Municipality.

The new valuation means the settlement faces a significant increase to its rates bill.

The Umkhonto Wesizwe Party says white Afrikaans-only places like Orania and Kleinfontein could be potentially abusing section 235 of the constitution.

This section confirms the right to self-determination for a group of people who share a common cultural and language heritage.

MK parliamentary chief whip Mzwanele Manyi: “We are here basically as a fact-finding mission, just to check what is happening here because we hear all kinds of things about this place, so we want to hear it from the horse's mouth.”

Last year, the Gauteng High Court declared Kleinfontein illegal as it did not comply with the Tshwane Municipality’s zoning regulations.
