TEMBISA - The Gauteng health department is expected to release findings into the fire that broke out at the Tembisa Hospital's accident and emergency unit.

Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will on Sunday afternoon brief the media about Saturday night’s inferno, while the unit remains closed as officials assess the extent of the damage.

Mop-up operations are now underway at the Tembisa Hospital after 58 patients had to be moved to other parts of the hospital when a fire broke out at the accident and emergency unit.

No injuries or fatalities were reported, while the Gauteng Department of Health has requested families call a dedicated number to check on their loved ones.

While the accident and emergency unit remains closed, other hospital services continue to operate.

Initial reports indicated that the fire started in the ceiling, department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the department would share more details at a briefing in Ekhuruleni on Sunday.

"We will be giving a status update later in the afternoon which will be led by the MEC Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko, to just apprise the public on the latest information in relation to the incident, but also on the way forward around that."
