CAPE TOWN - The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Western Cape says it wants the police and transport ministers to urgently intervene in the ongoing taxi violence plaguing the province.
This comes after prominent Cape Town taxi figure, Mongi Titi, was shot and killed at the Nyanga taxi rank on Wednesday.
Police are yet to make a breakthrough in their investigation into his death.
Detectives attached to the Provincial Taxi Violence Unit are hunting the gunmen, who are understood to have approached Titi's vehicle at the rank before opening fire.
Titi was an executive member of the CATA Regional Taxi Association and played a significant role in ongoing efforts to build a more unified, safe, and professional taxi sector.
Western Cape South African Communist Party (SACP) secretary and ANC spokesperson for Mobility, Benson Ngqentsu, has referred to Titi's murder as a brutal and senseless assassination.
"Mr Titi was not only a prominent leader within the taxi industry but also a sharp, committed, and principled individual whose insights and dedication to the sector will be profoundly missed. We call on the national ministers, Mchunu and Barbara Creecy to step in because there appears to be a void of leadership in this provincial government headed by the DA."
The South African National Taxi Council's Western Cape chairperson, Mandla Hermanus, said that Titi played a crucial role in the minibus taxi industry's efforts to ensure peace and stability.
"His death is a huge loss to the industry and we call upon law enforcement agencies to do everything in their power to ensure that the perpetrators of this crime are brought to justice. We also appeal for members of the industry to remain calm."
