JOHANNESBURG - The United Democratic Movement (UDM) in Cape Town has condemned the release of an alleged rape suspect in Khayelitsha.
According to the party, the suspect was assaulted by community members after the alleged incident, while the victim went to the police to report the case.
Police reportedly took the suspect to hospital for treatment but he was later seen back in the community following his release.
UDM councillor Bongani Maqungwana said the suspect's presence in the area has raised serious concerns and has urged authorities to act swiftly.
He said that re-arresting the suspect would go a long way in easing the fears of the victim and restoring trust in the justice system.
"We are calling, as the UDM, on the provincial and the district police management to make sure that they put everything in place and try by all means to arrest the suspect."
