JOHANNESBURG - KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli is calling on communities to take an active stand against gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in the province.

Speaking at the Oasis Church in Umlazi on Friday, Ntuli stressed the importance of strengthening community policing structures to help ensure safety in neighbourhoods.

The province has in recent months seen a surge in GBV and femicide cases.

Inanda Police Station in KZN also leads the country with the highest number of reported rape cases, followed by Umlazi Police Station.

The Premier urged church leaders in attendance to take the message of ending violence back to their congregations and called on worshippers observing Easter to include the fight against GBVF in their prayers.

Ntuli said community involvement and faith-based support were key to tackling this ongoing crisis.

"It's important that as the church, we pray and we also communicate a message in the church and outside, that we all need to stand together against the scourge, which is perpetrated against women and children, including crime in general."
