JOHANNESBURG - The Free State Department of Education is calling on parents and communities to help create a safer school environment to stop bullying.
This followed the tragic suicide of a 13-year-old learner in Harrismith.
The Grade 7 learner reportedly took her own life earlier in April, leaving behind a letter in which she detailed the bullying she endured from a classmate since the previous school term.
The Department of Education said the incident highlights the devastating impact of bullying on learner wellbeing and mental health.
Spokesperson Sibusiso Majola said the department is offering support to those affected.
"We are committed to providing support to learners and educators to prevent such incidents and promote a culture of kindness, empathy, and respect. Psychosocial support has already been provided to learners and educators affected by this incident."
