CAPE TOWN - Detectives attached to the Provincial Taxi Violence Unit are hunting gunmen responsible for the murder of a prominent taxi figure in Cape Town.
Mongi Titi was shot and killed at the Nyanga taxi rank on Wednesday.
Titi was an executive member of the CATA Regional Taxi Association and played a significant role in ongoing efforts to build a more unified, safe, and professional taxi sector.
The police's Joseph Swartbooi: "The information at our disposal indicates that unknown gunmen approached a Toyota Fortuner parked in the vicinity of the terminus, after which they opened fire on the occupant, a 45 year old man, who sustained fatal injuries. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene in an undisclosed direction and they are yet to be arrested."
The Western Cape's Mobility MEC, Isaac Sileku, said that the tragic loss had sent shockwaves through the transport sector and the Nyanga community.
He appealed to leaders in the taxi industry, operators, and drivers to remain calm and not resort to any acts of retaliation.
“This is a sad and painful loss for the transport sector and for the people of Nyanga. We believe the police will fully investigate what happened, and make sure those responsible are held accountable. Responding with violence will only bring more harm and make things worse for our community.”
