JOHANNESBURG - With three years left in the South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng top cop, Shadrack Sibiya, has reaffirmed his desire to be the next Hawks head.
Sibiya, who is currently the deputy national commissioner in charge of crime detection, is a seasoned detective who began his career with the police in 1983.
According to sources, Sibiya is being tipped to take over from current Hawks head, Godfrey Lebeya, whose term comes to an end in May.
Seasoned detective Sibiya said that should the president come knocking for an appointment for the position of Hawks head, he was more than willing to accept.
"I’d be lying to you if I say to you that I don’t have the aspirations of seeing myself one day as the national head of the DPCI [Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation]. Should the opportunity arise, after all, it is the prerogative of the president and the minister as to who they want to serve, that is the position that I would be happy to serve in leading to my retirement."
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to make his appointment for the next head of the Hawks as of 1 June.
