JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela is set to visit the family of a taxi owner who was shot and killed in Alberton.

The woman, who was affiliated with the Katlehong People’s Taxi Association, was murdered earlier this week in Buhle Park, Germiston.

It is understood that she had taken over her husband's business after he was killed more than five years ago.

Last week, the Gauteng Department of Transport and the taxi industry leaders reached an agreement to stop violence in the sector.

This meeting came after the MEC’s threats to close taxi ranks and cease licences for all warring associations.

At least 59 people have died in 2025 due to the increasing violent incidents in the industry.

Department spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said this recent murder was unacceptable.

"This goes against the commitment that has been made recently by the taxi industry to commit to the cessation of hostilities, and it is an indictment of the commitment that the industry has made to the people of Gauteng."

Mpya said the MEC's visit would serve as a means to address the ongoing scourge in the field.
