CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police have welcomed the hefty prison sentences handed down by the Bellville Regional Court to a trio involved in the killing of a taxi owner almost five years ago.
Siyabonga Dywili has been sentenced to life imprisonment, while Siphenati Ndlela and Lihle Plam each got 18 years behind bars.
It's understood that in June 2020, the trio robbed a 62-year-old man of his firearm before killing him in Bellville.
Police believe tensions between rival taxi associations over the Bellville to Paarl route were the cause of the attack.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swaartbooi explains how the gunmen were apprehended.
"They fled the scene in a Toyota Avanza, which was parked close by. The local police members responded to the complaint and saw the mentioned vehicle driving at high speed on Voortrekker Road and gave chase. The suspects opened fire on the police members in pursuit, who retaliated."
