CAPE TOWN - Investigations are continuing into a deadly shooting at Walter Sisulu University's Mthatha campus in the Eastern Cape.

It's alleged that students attacked the residence manager and his family at their on-campus accommodation on Tuesday, and later torched his car.

The demonstrations allegedly led to the residence manager shooting at the students.

The higher education and training ministry said that several people were injured, and a person who was not a registered student or university staff member died.

President of the South African Student Congress (SASCO), Alungile Kamtshe, said the students were protesting about their living conditions and he would learn further details after visiting the campus on Wednesday.

"We've been informed that contrary to what management may try to provide to the public, as some kind of a cover-up, that the person deceased might not have been a student. The person deceased was, of course, a student fighting for conditions because that was indeed a student according to reports we've received from the Student Representative Council."
