Higher Education Minister Dr Nobuhle Nkabane has criticised the violence.
Spokesperson Camagwini Mavovana: "The minister strongly condemns all forms of violence and intimidation on university campuses and reiterates that students, staff, and all members of the academic community must be protected. Institutions of higher learning must remain safe spaces that nurture learning, dialogue, and development."
She added that the minister has called on the university to submit a full report into the violent demonstration.
"The minister has also requested that the university furnish her with a comprehensive report on the incident as a matter of urgency and without delay, given the seriousness of the situation."
The minister is expected to visit the university soon.
