On Tuesday night, the institution denied having a record of the victim, who was identified as Sisonke Mbolekwa, saying that he was not a registered student at the university.
But student leaders said that Mbolekwa was a well-known education student.
As the conflicting reports of his status at the institution continue, his family said it wanted answers about the incident that led to his death.
