MTHATHA - Demonstrators at Walter Sisulu University (WSU)’s Mthatha campus are calling for justice after a student was shot and killed on campus on Tuesday morning.
The student was shot allegedly by a campus residence manager during a protest over issues including the deplorable state of accommodation.
Students have been burning rubble, singing and chanting all day, after reportedly torching a car belonging to the university official.
While the situation quietened down at WSU’s main campus, students demanded justice for the student killed during the protest.
Student Representative Council (SRC) member Indiphile Mgaba said they want the residence manager fired.
“Our demands as students right now are that Mr Mampane must go to jail, he must also stop working, [and] that gun must be taken from him because it is clear that people around him are not safe anymore.”
Meanwhile, another student said students are not okay with what they witnessed.
“The students are frustrated, and they want [justice] for the student that was shot.”
While police have confirmed the incident, no arrest has been made.
Eastern Cape police have committed to thoroughly investigate the deadly shooting at WSU.
According to police, demonstrators injured the manager’s wife while pelting stones at their residence.
Mthatha’s acting district commissioner brigadier Vukile Ntuli said: “The cases are being crafted with regards to all the incidents that took place within the institution and further investigation will ensue because it is actually the one that will take us to effecting arrests finally.”
