JOHANNESBURG – Weightlifting South Africa has named Team SA for the 2025 African Senior Weightlifting Championship.
The competition will be held in Cote D’Or, Moka, Mauritius from 20th April to 28th April 2025.
Among them is Alexandra Mundell, a triple threat who never leaves a competition without silverware or with the audience in awe of her performance.
“Getting to compete in the Africa Champs last year was the absolute highlight of my weightlifting career thus far. It means so much to me to have the opportunity to be a part of the SA team again, and I so look forward to learning and embracing the experience. You never know how long you get to compete as an athlete, and whilst I always want to be stronger and improve, I want to truly be grateful and present at each competition I get to do,” said Alexandra Mundell.
The dancer, powerlifter and weightlifter brought home three bronze medals from the 2024 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship in Egypt.
“I have been navigating an injury for the last few weeks, so I have had to readjust my initial goals for the competition, and have had to try not to think about what numbers I will actually be able to attempt. I am hoping my body will allow me to just give my absolute best on the day, even if I might not have had an ideal training block going into it. I don’t want to walk off the platform knowing I could’ve tried harder.”
The athlete who competes in the 64kg category went to her first international weightlifting competition last year at the Africa championships, competed in the 55kg category where she won bronze in the snatch with 74kg, in the Clean and Jerk she lifted 85kg and bagged an overall bronze medal for lifting 159 kg.

She tells Eyewitness News that she ended 2024 with a great training block and feels excited and strong about 2025.
“Prior to this, I had actually bombed out in my last competition. I still feel relatively new to weightlifting and hope to have many more years in the sport, but I feel like every training cycle and competition has presented new lessons. Failure happens to everyone, and training through blocks and competitions where it feels like nothing is going right truly makes you appreciate when it all finally comes together, and to enjoy and respect that it’s all part of the journey.”
She shares with Eyewitness News her desire to compete more and qualify for bigger competitions. To gain more experience at international competitions, both competing and training in the training hall with lifters who inspire her to be a better lifter.
“I am hoping to get a whole lot stronger and hopefully qualify to compete internationally one more time, if the opportunity presents itself. Otherwise, I hope to just enjoy the process and not take my health and training for granted. 100 kg+ clean and jerk on the competition platform is hopefully in my near future too.”
