CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape said it supported the transparent appointment process for the province's commissioner for children.

This after the Standing Committee on Premier and Constitutional Matters decided to conduct public interviews for the position live on YouTube on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The current commissioner, Christina Nomdo, will not be returning for a second term when her tenure comes to an end in May.

A child commissioner is responsible for promoting children's rights, needs, and interests.

DA spokesperson on premier and constitutional matters, Benedicta van Minnen, said the commissioner must be someone who will champion these rights and hold government accountable to its youngest residents.

"Over the past month, the standing committee has met regularly to develop a fair and inclusive process to appoint a new commissioner for children. We rigorously shortlisted candidates, refined suitable interview questions, and established a method to ensure the appointee is someone who will represent the rights and views of children while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and trust."
