MTHATHA -The Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has revealed that the person shot and killed during student demonstrations on Tuesday morning is not a registered student at the institution.

The university broke its silence hours after chaos erupted at its main campus in Mthatha.

It says students never gave notice about their planned protest.

The university says it's investigating the cause of the violent protest that claimed one life.

WSU says it is also working on identifying the victim, but confirms the deceased was not a student or employee at the campus.

The institution says management was caught off guard by Tuesday’s activities, claiming they were unaware of the issues raised.

But students insist management has, on various occasions, ignored their grievances.

The want a bigger study centre, safe accommodation, the removal of male security guards at female students’ residences and strong internet connectivity – among other things.

WSU has also condemned the demonstration, saying it disrupted the safety of students and staff.
