JOHANNESBURG - The community of Khutsong is seeking legal representation to take government to court for the slow repair of sinkholes in the area.

Environmental activist Jeremiah Ramokgoatedi intends to legally challenge the municipality after numerous requests for help fell on deaf ears.

This comes after another sinkhole developed at the Rest In Peace section, threatening the closure of the Khutsong West clinic.

In a letter sent to the president’s office, Ramokgoatedi is calling for Khutsong to be on the agenda of the National Disaster Centre.

He cited a lack of maintenance following a sewage spillage, saying it worsened the area built on dolomite rocks.

He said that he suspects the lack of response to his letter was because the office of the president might not have given the president the letter.

He added that a strong legal representative could assist them.

"The community of Khutsong has been taken for granted, that’s why for the past eight years there was no action or rehabilitation.

He also said more affluent areas like Centurion, also affected by sinkholes, were attended to faster than townships like Khutsong.
