JOHANNESBURG - The Roads and Transport Department in Gauteng said that launching the Easter safety campaign would help combat motor-related crime in the province.
This as the Easter season is characterised by high traffic volumes, with motorists driving to various holiday destinations.
On Monday, Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, Premier Panyaza Lesufi and MMC for public safety launched the province's Easter safety campaign on the N12 highway in Slovo Park.
Diale-Tlabela said the activation was aimed at creating awareness about the dangers of drunken driving, speeding and pedestrian fatigue.
"We are here because this is one of the areas where we have a high rate of pedestrian fatalities. People here, they cross the freeway at night when they are drunk. And this is part of us to create awareness. People here requested that the government build a bridge. We have built a bridge but they are still not using the bridge because of crime, that's why tomorrow [Tuesday] we are launching an integrated approach to dealing with crime in our province."
