CAPE TOWN - In the past week, traffic officers have arrested 35 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

This is contained in the City of Cape Town’s latest weekly traffic report.

It added that the Emergency Communication Centre received 1,800 calls and noted an increase in cases of assault.

The city’s MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said that more than 56,000 traffic offences were recorded and impounded more than 200 public transport vehicles.

"Our staff deployment will follow the festive season plan with emphasis on the roads, popular recreational areas and other places of public interest but we will also continue our focus on daily operational demands like the deployment in gang and crime hotspots," said Smith.
