CAPE TOWN - The woman believed to be the mastermind behind a fatal shooting inside the Wynberg court building appeared in the same court on Monday.

Thirty-five-year-old Shireen Mathews made a brief appearance in the Wynberg Magistrates Court for the murder of a 50-year-old man in the corridors of the court building last week.

The State told the court Mathews is alleged to have recruited the services of the Junky Funky Kids gang to kill the victim in retaliation for another murder.

Security at the Wynberg court building was beefed up on Monday ahead of the appearance of Mathews, who is charged with the murder of a 50-year-old man.

The victim was a murder accused taxi driver from Vrygrond, and according to the state, Mathews orchestrated the hit in retaliation.

In a packed courtroom under heavy police guard, Mathews covered her face as she walked into the dock.

It's the state's case that Mathews conspired with the gang to murder the victim.

Acting provincial commissioner Bongani Maqashalala said police made another arrest related to the murder on Monday morning.

"We have been conducting investigations day and night since the day of the incident. This [Monday] morning, we made a second arrest, and the person is being questioned. And also, we have identified more people, so we will effect more arrests."

Maqashalala said police were hunting down four more suspects related to the case.

The matter is set to be back in court again on 23 April.
