CAPE TOWN - Head of the Road Accident Fund (RAF), Collins Letsoalo, is facing fresh scrutiny, this time over a R79 million lease deal flagged by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

Letsoalo is being investigated for allegedly skirting procurement rules to secure new offices for the RAF in Johannesburg.

On Monday, he was briefing the media on the matter as pressure mounts for accountability.

It’s the latest twist in a string of controversies that have dogged his tenure, from a failed attorney panel shake-up that cost taxpayers millions, to questions about his CV.

The SIU said this lease formed part of a wider pattern of financial mismanagement, including more than R340 million paid out in duplicate to law firms, with only a fraction recovered.

The full SIU report is still pending, with Monday’s briefing expected to provide much-needed answers.
