JOHANNESBURG - The North West education department said it was awaiting the outcome of medical investigations into the death of a pupil on Friday.
The child died after eating snacks allegedly bought from a local vendor.
The eight-year-old girl and her sister, aged ten, both complained of stomach cramps while at school.
They were then taken to hospital, where the youngest child died, while her sister remains in the intensive care unit.
Department spokesperson Mphata Molokwane said that they were now awaiting toxicology reports.
"Preliminary information indicates that they may have eaten snacks from a local shop the day before. MEC Viola Motsumi expressed deep sorrow and offered support to the grieving family, while a psychological support team has been dispatched to assist the school community."
