Provincial Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta has called for the criminal charges against the mother to be dropped.
In a statement, Fanta said the woman’s actions should be viewed in the context of a mother trying to protect her child from an assault.
"The case has garnered significant media attention and public support, with many South Africans rallying behind the mother, viewing her action as a reflection of a desperate fight against a deeply entrenched culture of violence.
"Social media platforms have become a space for individuals to express their solidarity and share their own experience of violence and trauma," said Mpumzi Zuzile, Fanta's spokesperson
