JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says he has not been briefed by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) regarding the ongoing probe into KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Last month, IPID announced they were investigating Mkhwanazi for a 2023 matter related to a case against a Department of Correctional Services (DCS) officer from Richards Bay in Northern KZN.
A complaint was laid with IPID claiming Mkhwanazi interfered in the arrest of a DCS official.

IPID confirmed that the case against Mkhwanazi is still ongoing despite several reports that Mkhwanazi is cleared.
Addressing the media in Pretoria on Friday morning, Mchunu clarified he does not know where the matter stands.
"They have not briefed us or updated us on anything in that regard. But we are aware through reading of what is being said in the media as such. They [IPID] don’t have to inform us when they make decisions and the nature of the decisions that they take."
He explained that he has no issue with Mkhwanazi.
"Now, if we want to be specific and say what my relations are with Commissioner Mkhwanazi. They are very good relations, just like I have good relations with other commissioners in every province, except that I come from KZN, and he is also operating there."
