DURBAN – The Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) says its investigation into KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police boss, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, continues.

This is despite some reports that IPID has completed the probes.

But it refutes these claims.

The police watchdog previously raised concerns about the state of policing in KZN, citing the deadly shootings between police and suspects.

A march in support of Mkhwanazi, planned for Friday, has also been cancelled.

Organisers said the decision was based on IPID withdrawing its investigation into Mkhwanazi.

“As the movement and the community of KwaZulu-Natal we saw no need to continue with the march after those positive developments.”

But IPID has told Eyewitness News it’s still investigating Mkhwanazi.

IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping said, “The IPID position as per our statement released on the 16th of March 2025 is that we are not going to engage on the matter until our investigation is concluded.”

During an interview with Eyewitness News earlier in April, Mkhwanazi said the probes into him started after he cleared counterintelligence head Feroz Khan on charges linked to a 2021 drug bust.
