JOHANNESBURG - The South African Communist Party (SACP) has reiterated its call for an inquest into the death of Chris Hani, saying many questions remain unanswered.

Thursday marks 32 years since the former SACP leader was gunned down outside his Boksburg home by polish immigrant Janusz Walus.

The SACP and government commemorated the life of the former anti-apartheid activist at his hometown in Cofimvaba, in the Eastern Cape.

Thursday’s commemoration of Hani’s life was the first since his killer, Walus, was deported back to his home country, Poland.

The SACP said the government should have never let him leave without spilling the whole truth.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the SACP said the gun used to kill Hani was taken from the military armoury, however, no disclosure has been made on who booked it out.

It said Hani was the third target on an assassination list that also included Nelson Mandela. But the authors of that list remain at large.

The SACP said the apartheid government at the time mishandled the crime scene, including neglecting crucial information that could have led to more investigations.
