JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela is holding a prayer session in Soweto on Thursday, calling for an end to taxi violence.

The province has recently seen a sharp uptick in taxi-related violence, with more civilians caught in the crossfire.

Just this week, three taxi marshalls affiliated with the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA) were gunned down while patrolling in Mofolo.

Since 30 March, multiple people, including passengers, have lost their lives in attacks linked to the ongoing turmoil in the taxi industry.

Many women from the community have gathered at the prayer session, holding posters demanding an end to the relentless violence.

Residents said that they were exhausted and traumatised by the escalating shootings.

Lorcia Ngwenya, an attendee, said: "We are affected by the taxi violence. You know, some of the people are widows, some of the children are orphans, and it affects us as the community."

There's a strong call from those gathered for taxi owners and stakeholders to unite and restore peace in the area.
