JOHANESBURG - On 30 April, the world celebrates International Jazz Day; leading up to the day Centurion's Shades of Summer Boutique Hotel will host a jazz event on South Africa's Freedom Day.
Titled the Heroines of Jazz, the organisers describe the event as a movement, a declaration as well as a celebration of jazz's changing legacy in the country.
"It is quite deliberate to have Heroines of Jazz on April 27th, Freedom Day. The day honours South Africa's first democratic elections, which are a potent representation of equality, justice, and political emancipation. But we think there is still a lot of work to be done," said the curators of the event, DJ duo MarumoFemme.
"Particularly when it comes to eliminating structural injustices and attaining economic and cultural freedom, true freedom is still a journey. We continue to struggle for respect, equality, and access, especially for women, artists, and underrepresented voices."
The line-up features artists such as trombonist, vocalist and composer Siya Makuzeni, vocalist and composer Gabi Motuba, Iphupho L’ka Biko Big Band as well as DJs Ms Kopano Pule, Mamello Pule, Ms Elisa the Selector and Boitumelo Pitso.
"I'm really excited to be a part of the Heroines of Jazz concert lineup and be a part of a gorgeous lineup," Motuba remarked.
“Siyama Kuzeni, another amazing singer I've admired over the years, will be joining me, and I'm thrilled to be performing on stage with her and other artists," she said.
