On Thursday, Johannesburg Metro police kick-started the Easter road safety campaign at the Grasmere Toll Plaza to encourage motorists travelling in and out of the province to adhere to road rules.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said, "We know that most people will be leaving the city, going to various destinations across the country. During the Easter period a lot of people will be going for religious pilgrimage, but also going back home and for holidays as well, and as they navigate through the roads, it's important for them to be safe."
ZERO TOLERANCE ON DRUNK DRIVING
The JMPS has also warned motorists that there will be zero tolerance for drunk driving as the annual Easter break draws near.
Earlier this week, reports emerged highlighting an increase in the number of drunk driving arrests, with JMPD officers detaining more than 100 motorists for driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages.
Fihla said the campaign demonstrates a unified commitment to prioritising road safety.
"With Diageo, we have partnered with a campaign called Sober Versus Drunk Driving, and this is specifically aimed at targeting people who drive under the influence of alcohol."
