CAPE TOWN - The Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) believes South Africans can’t run away from the tax debate and the need to raise more revenue for the government.

The head of the office, Dr Dumisani Djantjies, says the debate around tax is not a uniquely South African topic as the whole world is currently engaged in the issue of raising taxes.

On Wednesday, Djantjies briefed the National Council of Province's select committee on appropriations on the 2025 division of revenue and appropriation bills, following the PBO’s analysis of the budget, which includes a 0.5% VAT increase.

"It is an international debate now, where should we get more revenue. And I think we can’t run away from it, particularly in our situation where we are a bit of an outlier in many of the aspects."

Djantjies also believes the country needs more revenue.

"And I think we need more revenue because we have this good plan that’s set out in place and needs to be funded."
