JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa hopes the country's first policing summit will find ways to better involve communities in fighting crime.
The summit, which kicked off on Tuesday, brings together various partners from police and the private sector to find solutions in addressing crime.
Ramaphosa addressed delegates at the gathering in Kempton Park.
"From this summit, we need a clear plan on how to better involve our communities in crime prevention as well as crime detection and harnessing the potential of our CPFs [community policing forums] in line with relevant legislation and regulations."
He believes people within communities have the best information regarding crimes committed.
"If you hear of a crime that has been committed in a particular area, you often hear from people, 'we know who could have done it'. They have real intelligence about how that criminal act could have happened."
