DURBAN - A police officer attached to the Presidential Protection Service (PPS) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has been killed by suspected criminals in Inanda.

The officer, who cannot be named yet, was shot by unknown suspects on Tuesday in what is believed to be a robbery.

He was robbed of his service firearm during the robbery.

Sources close to EWN confirmed that the police sergeant was part of the Presidential Protection Service.

The unit is responsible for the security planning and protection of heads of state, including the president, deputy, and former presidents.

Initial reports indicate that he had stopped at a shop when he was attacked by suspects who opened fire at him.

After he was robbed of his firearm and man bag, the suspects fled in a silver-grey VW Polo.

The sergeant, who was part of the unit's static team, died moments after arriving at a nearby health facility.

This is the second police officer killed in Inanda since the beginning of this year.
