Meeting to address ongoing taxi violence in Gauteng set for Wednesday

JOHANNESBURG - A meeting to discuss ways to resolve the growing taxi violence in Gauteng is expected to take place on Wednesday.
A taxi marshal belonging to the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association was among three marshals who were shot and killed in Mofolo, in Soweto this week.
Since March, an estimated 30 people, including passengers, have died because of attacks in the sector.
The Gauteng transport department’s Lesiba Mpya said Wednesday’s meeting would formulate a framework for regulations and transformation in the industry.
"We remain committed as a department to restoring calm in ensuring that the Gauteng transport system remains safe and free from intimidation. The MEC [Kedibone Diale-Tlabela] further urged all stakeholders to cooperate fully to embrace peaceful dialogue as the only way to resolve violence."
