JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Joburg said that cash-strapped residents were in for a tough ride as they not only face a 0.5% VAT increase but a hike in municipal tariffs as well.
Residents could be set to pay more on their municipal bills following the metro’s decision to increase tariffs on electricity, water, refuse and property rates.
While these tariffs are expected to take effect from 1 July, a final decision will be made following the public participation process.
DA regional leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said the city had no regard for its residents.
"You cannot fix a broken city by taxing people into poverty. You fix it by fixing the government. That means rooting out cadre deployment, appointing qualified professionals, and restoring functional service delivery. As Joburg residents take part in IPD sessions, we call on every household to speak out and reject these unjustified and unaffordable increases."
