JOHANNESBURG - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has cautioned of heavy downpours in most parts of the country on Tuesday.

A yellow level four warning has been issued for the Northern Cape, North West, and the Free State.

Residents in the Free State have been contending with continuous rainfall that has led to severe floods since last week.

Officials in the province issued evacuation notices for people living close to riverbanks and dams.

Forecaster Edward Engelbrecht said: "These thunderstorms are mainly going to result in heavy downpours that could lead to flooding of roads and low-lying areas, but also possible damage to infrastructure due to strong winds from those thunderstorms."

Meanwhile, a yellow level two warning was issued for Gauteng on Tuesday.

"And then with that also, we have a yellow level two for severe thunderstorms that's covering the northern parts of the Eastern Cape, as well as southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, and then also southwestern parts of Gauteng."
