JOHANNESBURG - Dozens of protesters in Soweto have accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of failing to act in the case of a seven-year-old girl raped in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.
On Tuesday, they handed over their memorandum of demands, calling for an urgent investigation into allegations of police corruption.
The child was allegedly assaulted on school grounds in October 2024, but police said investigations at the time produced little evidence and no witnesses.
While the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) later declined to prosecute the case, police top brass have in recent weeks, reopened the case and deployed specialist detectives to the Eastern Cape town to pursue new leads.
Nationwide, solidarity marches have sprouted in support of the young girl and other victims of gender-based violence.
On Tuesday, the marchers gathered outside the Orlando Police Station, peacefully demonstrating and handing over a memorandum of demands.
The document calls for the resignation of Mchunu, renewed efforts to bring the child’s perpetrator to justice, and an urgent investigation into allegations of police corruption.
While some of the claims remain untested, protesters said their movement was rooted in frustration and a desire for accountability.
Convenor Jessica Ngomane said: "In the next 14 days, that's when we are expecting their responses."
As the march drew to a close, protesters vowed to keep up the pressure until their demands were met.
