JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have arrested 110 people and killed 15 others who were identified as criminal kingpins in the province.
The arrests come two months after Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi told the provincial legislature during the State of the Province Address (SOPA) that 450 people were identified as kingpins.
Speaking at the policing summit at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park on Tuesday, Lesufi informed President Cyril Ramaphosa and police top brass that they continue to clamp down on hardened criminals.
He said they have been monitoring the identified criminal kingpins in the province.
"These are people who are hijacking, these are people that are involved in cash heists, these are people that are renting people to kill other people, and these are people that are planning ATM bombings and many other horrendous crimes in our province."
Lesufi said they have been monitoring these 450 kingpins for some time.
"We are proud that in the last two months, Mr President, that of the 450 people we have been tracking, 150 have been arrested and at least 15 have been reconnected up there with their maker in the sky."
