CAPE TOWN - It's a wet and rainy start to the second school term in the Western Cape.

Schools open their doors on Tuesday morning, following a brief break.

The provincial education department subsidised security at 443 schools during the holiday period when schools in various communities are commonly targeted by vandals.

Meanwhile, Education MEC, David Maynier on Monday tabled his department's budget.

"This year, we will spend R33.3 billion on education, which is a 5.9% increase compared to last year’s budget, and the largest departmental budget in the Western Cape."

Maynier said that the greatest challenge that must be tackled is poor learning outcomes.

"We are stepping up to tackle the most pressing challenges faced in education by improving learning outcomes, expanding access to education, creating secure school environments, supporting vulnerable learners and ensuring departmental sustainability."
