CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government's climate change response strategy is set to integrate electric transport for both public and private vehicles by 2030.

This initiative aims to modernise the public transport sector and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The department said that replacing traditional engines with electric alternatives would have significant environmental benefits.

In July last year, Golden Arrow Bus Services signed a deal for 120 electric buses.

MEC for mobility, Isaac Sileku, said that these electric buses would not only enhance sustainability but also bring economic value to the city.

"As the recent rollout of electric buses in urban areas and the phase approach through the electrification of government fleets demonstrate, it is vital to mainstream climate adaptation efforts into infrastructure and service planning. This has the potential to maximise economic opportunities for businesses and residents of the province."
