DURBAN - Slain gender-based violence (GBV) victim, Nokuphila Mbhele will be laid to rest in her hometown of Umzumbe, on the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) south coast on Saturday.

Mbhele’s lifeless body was found locked in a rented room in the Mandawe area last Sunday.

She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Police investigations indicate that 29-year-old Mbhele was killed by her lover, who had accused her of cheating.

He then turned the gun on himself, but only sustained a gunshot wound to the head and is currently recovering in hospital under police guard.

On the same Sunday, another woman, Nandipha Lifana, was shot and killed, allegedly by her lover.

Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli visited the victims’ families on Monday.

He said that GBV remains a crisis in KZN.

“I realise that we still have a huge problem, and we need to do more to ensure that everyone responds quite positively on the problem.”

Ntuli is also expected to attend Mbhele’s funeral on Saturday.
