JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has condemned the killing of journalists in Gaza, calling for an end to attacks on media personnel.

The statement follows the recent deaths of two more journalists, bringing the total number of journalists and media workers killed in Gaza since October 2023 to 208.

Palestine TV correspondent Mohammed Mansour, together with his wife and child, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on their home in Khan Younis.

This attack was reported on social media by 23-year-old Al Jazeera journalist Hossam Shabat, who over an hour later was killed in Beit Lahia when a drone strike targeted his car.

SANEF said the killing of journalists is among the many war crimes committed by the Israeli government since the conflict began.

The forum’s project manager, Hopewell Radebe, said these attacks are an assault on press freedom.

“The South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) is really appalled by what is happening in Gaza and that is the continuation of the killing of journalists and we know that it is deliberate because at one stage many journalists were able to record a drone that was targeting them and we are very much sad that it seems to be the policy of the Israeli government to not spare the lives of journalists which is against the international law.”
