JOHANNESBURG - The Office of the Public Protector has joined voices expressing dismay over the rape of a seven-year-old girl in Eastern Cape.

The child was sexually violated in October, allegedly at her school.

Police investigations into the crime are continuing and no arrests have been made.

Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka said she was encouraged to see State institutions take necessary steps to investigate the seven-year-old’s rape case.

“It is worrying that this incident comes nine months since we issued an investigation report on systemic deficiencies in our country's criminal justice system in responding to gender-based violence challenges.”

She said her office was committed to the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).

Gcaleka also noted that many similar cases go unreported.
