JOHANNESBURG - A man accused of raping a minor is expected to appear before the Nkonwankowa Magistrates Court in Limpopo on Friday amid a rise of similar cases countrywide. 

The 54-year-old from Mopane district allegedly raped his neighbour's 11-year-old child on Monday.

It's understood that the incident occurred when the little girl and her friend visited the suspect’s home to watch movies. 

According to police, the children, who were reportedly familiar with the suspect, slept over at his home and its alleged that in the morning, the suspect sent her friend to the shops and proceeded to rape the other girl.

Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba: "The provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe has strongly condemend the prevalent rape cases involving minors in the province. This condemnation comes after 54-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping his 11-year-old neigbour in the Ritavi policing area under the Mopani district. The victim reportedly told her mother and a case of rape was opened at the local police station for further investigation."
