CAPE TOWN - Amid widespread concern about the 12.7% increased electricity tariff which started that week, Eskom said it remains committed to protecting electricity affordability.
Social justice groups and community activists said the electricity tariff increase would push poor South Africans further into an already tight corner.

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokoena said the challenges the power utility was facing came as a result of previous decisions.
"Which have historically prevented Eskom from recovering the full efficient costs of generating electricity."
Mokoena said the changes to the tariff structure are a move towards creating a system that supports alternative energy sources.
"These reforms pave the way for fully unbundled tariffs. Such changes enhance cost transparency, offering customers a clearer breakdown of their electricity expenses."
Mokoena added that the price increase was critical to ensure the efficient production and delivery of electricity, recover costs and secure reasonable return.
