JOHANNESBURG - For actress Dawn Thandeka King, Shaka iLembe is not just a popular TV production that she is part of, it is an opportunity to share a piece of South African history with the younger generation, especially her children.

The highly anticipated second season of Shaka iLembe is set to premiere on Sunday, June 15, EWN caught up with the cast members at the show’s media engagement event this week.

Dawn Thandeka King plays the role of Mkabayi, a daughter of King Jama and sister to King Senzangakhona, a visionary who is respected and feared.

King explained how she helps her children to understand and interpret the show.

“I share insights from the show with them. I want them to understand that this is more than just a TV series—it’s a reflection of history and culture. It’s important for them to know where they come from and, hopefully, be proud that their mother is part of preserving this legacy,” she said.

Season two expands the storyline, introducing new characters and exploring the landscapes of the Swati kingdom and the rolling hills of the Xhosa, further enriching the historical drama. Among the new cast members are Sikhanyiso Sithole as Hletjiwe, the Ngwane Princess; Anele Nene as Sikhunyana, a younger son of Zwide; Zamani Mbatha as Nomahlanjana, Zwide’s beloved son; Amanda Seome as Ntombazana, daughter to Zwide; and Luyanda Zuma as Liyana, serving under Queen Mthaniya.

Desiree Markgraaff, managing director of The Bomb Shelter, revealed that Season 2 delves deeper into Shaka’s journey as he ascends the throne. Played by Lemogang Tsipa, Shaka’s leadership, strategic brilliance, and empire-building efforts take center stage.

Ensuring that Shaka iLembe maintains its powerful storytelling in its second season wasn’t a difficult task for the cast, according to King.

“What we did in Season 1 was massive. We remained true to the characters, and that’s what made the story so compelling. For Season 2, we are carrying the same commitment—staying authentic to the characters and allowing the story to unfold naturally. The magic happens when we stay true to the roles we embody,” she concluded.

Lead actor Lemogang Tsipa described the weight of stepping into the role of King Shaka, balancing the responsibility of carrying both a story and a lasting legacy.

“Some days, I didn’t feel worthy; other days, I felt capable. Emotions, fear and doubts were a constant visitor. But with the incredible team we have it was a walkable journey. They natured and helped us in telling the story,” he shared.

Newcomer Anele Nene expressed his excitement about joining the cast, calling it a dream come true.

“I don't know of any performer back in Durban who did not want to be a part of Shaka iLembe because I remember we'd just be a group of gents watching Shaka season one, everyone would be like, how am I not in that? Because everybody wanted to be a part of it. And for it to finally manifest, I was so grateful and it was a God did moment,” he said.
